The knee is the largest weight-bearing joint in the body. This joint can support two to five times a person’s body weight, and as a result, makes it susceptible to wear and tear over time. Chronic knee pain affects 25% of adults and can have a detrimental effect on an individual’s daily function and quality of life.

The knee has a collection of sensory nerves, called genicular nerves, that transmit pain signals from the knee to the brain. A genicular nerve block temporarily blocks the nerve signals in the knee. If two blocks are successful in alleviating a large percentage of your pain, a radiofrequency ablation of the genicular nerves may be performed. Radiofrequency ablation uses heat to reduce or stop the transmission of pain, which has the potential to provide a long-lasting relief.

INDICATIONS FOR GENICULAR NERVE BLOCKS:

  • Chronic knee pain
  • Knee osteoarthritis
  • Postoperative knee pain
  • Patients who are non-surgical candidates for the knee
